Arts Bulletin 270 10 April 2008
This Week's Feature - Alcoa Poppykettle Festival | Poppykettle Girl
Fun at a previous Poppykettle Festival
Johnstone Park | The Alcoa Poppykettle Festival returns bigger and better than ever, with three days of fun-filled concerts, films, workshops, singing and dancing. The Festival has been Geelong's premier children's festival for more than 25 years and is dedicated to promoting and celebrating the performing arts for young people. This year the festival has been expanded to a three-day event, with a Family Day added to the program on the Saturday, to allow mums, dads, kids, grandparents and others from throughout the region and beyond to participate (see details below).
The Poppykettle Festival was inspired by local author Robert Ingpen's award-winning children's book 'The Voyage of the Poppykettle', which has recently been re-released for a new generation of children to enjoy. Today, the festival is a unique multi-arts event that encourages children to celebrate the arts through participation and performance.
Headlining this year's festival is Cosentino, one of the world's most unique and talented illusionists. Be prepared to take a trip into the realms of your imagination, with dazzling magic and illusions blended with energetic dance, dangerous nail-biting escapes, audience participation and many surprising twists. Cosentino is appearing at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) on on Friday 18 April and Saturday 19 April.
Also appearing at the lunchtime concerts on Thursday 17 April and Saturday 19 April will be The Mighty BuZZniks, a highly energized, richly musical group playing a concoction of rock, folk, hip hop and pop that gives kids the thrill of live music. The quirky humour in their lyrics is seriously fun and even educational.
During Family Day, children and adults can participate in a range of workshops including theatre sports, singing, storytelling, marimbas and percussion and hip hop dance. A highlight of the festival will be a presentation with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) at GPAC during Family Day. The MSO, together with young Geelong musicians, will present a musical interpretation of the Poppykettle story, with narration by Robert Ingpen.

| Performing Arts | As You Like It The 2008 Alcoa Theatre Season continues with The Bell Shakespeare Company's production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It. This play explores our desire to escape the slings and arrows of everyday life for a lighter, more romantic place. Bright, breezy, and reminiscent of the best holiday you ever had, As You Like It, directed by John Bell and starring Saskia Smith (All Saints, The Rage In Placid Lake), is a comedy for anyone who has ever contemplated packing it all in for a simpler life. In the Forest of Arden, brothers, lovers, friends and foes are tricked, tried and tested in a pastoral pastiche of life, love and the whole damn thing. Join Rosalind as she goes undercover to right wrongs and in the process, develops a surprising insight into matters of the heart. As You Like It, Shakespeare's masterpiece of romantic comedy, shows The Bard's genius through fantasy, romance, delicate wit, and broad humour.

*NEW* Little Murders Of Little Murders, Jules Feiffer wrote that it was "..a 'post assassination play', set in the age of urban paranoia where motiveless mass murder is as much a part of the atmosphere as air and noise pollution." Sounds depressing doesn't it? Although the play is one of the most devastating hatchet jobs on civilisation ever seen on the stage, it is a cruel but also very funny caricature of modern life. Originally set in the America of the 1960s, it feels as fresh today as it was then. For better or worse, maybe we've just caught up. Karl Marx is supposed to have said that history repeats itself - at first as tragedy then as farce. Little Murders can show us how. The play centres on the Newquist family. Superficially happy, they are absolutely typical of what we might call the silent majority. They live in a kind of bubble, content with their lives. But what happens when reality simply doesn't co-operate? Or worse, when it intrudes uninvited? | Dates: | 11- 13, 17-19 and 24-26 April 2008 Matinee 20 April | | Time: | Evening performances 8pm Matinee 2pm | | Venue: | Woodbin Theatre, 15 Coronation Street, Geelong West | | Cost: | Adult $20 Concession $18 Student $12 | | Contact: | (03) 5225 1200 | | Email: | info@geelongrep.com.au | | Website: | www.geelongrep.com.au | The Geelong Chorale - John Rutter: Requiem with English Sacred Choral Music The Chorale's new Music Director, Manfred Pohlenz, has chosen English sacred choral music for the Chorale's first 2008 performance, which will be held in Sacred Heart College's new $7.3m state-of-the-art Centre. Remember when trams ran down Moorabool St? When Corio Village was the only Shopping Centre in Geelong? When changing TV channels meant turning a clunky knob and 'remote' simply meant a long way away? Shirley and Colin bring all this up when they take another stroll down Geelong's memory lane. They'll again be showing the images and singing the hit songs of those slower, simpler times. Can you remember when Nat King Cole's 'Mona Lisa' was knocked off the number one slot by Johnny Ray's 'Cry'? Then you're old enough to enjoy this show. Includes morning tea from Bakers Delight. Parisian Soiree - Elysium Ensemble The music in this program displays the intimacy, delicacy, refinement and, above all, the douceur ('sweetness') of the chamber music written during the age of Louis XIV and Louis XV. This is the music of elegant conversation that, with the natural charm and sensitivity of its melodies and the classical beauty of its forms, delights the intellect and moves the heart. Greg Dikmans, baroque flute brings the Ensemble again to Geelong together with Lucinda Moon, baroque violin, Laura Vaughan, bass violion and Donald Nicolson, harpsichord to play the music of Couperin, Marais, Leclair and Telemann.
