This Week's Feature - The Geelong Chorale: John Rutter's Requiem and Short Pieces of English Choral Music
Catherine Northey
Catherine Northey

Chorale Singing
The Geelong Chorale

Manfred Pohlenz
Manfred Pohlenz
The Geelong Chorale will perform John Rutter's Requiem, with other short pieces of English choral music, at the new Costa Centre for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart College.

Soprano Catherine Northey will sing the sublime solo music in the Requiem.  A small instrumental ensemble comprising flute, oboe, cello, glockenspiel, percussion and keyboard will accompany the work.  The overall feeling of this lovely work is of serenity and hopefulness.  This was the preferred choice of music at the many memorial services in the US following the terrible events of 11 September, 2001 (9/11).

Rutter, born in 1944, is a prolific writer of beautiful music, largely for choirs, and much of it, but not all, sacred.  He is highly honoured as a composer, arranger and editor of choral music.  In 1996 he was awarded the Lambeth Doctorate of Music by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and many international organisations have honoured him.  He lives near Cambridge, where he studied music and conducts internationally.

This is Geelong Chorale's  first concert conducted by the new music director, Geelong-based Manfred Pohlenz.  He is a highly-trained baritone with qualifications from the University of South Australia, Queensland Conservatorium of Music and the esteemed Juilliard School of Music, New York and brings a wealth of teaching skills to the choir.  Manfred has a wonderful baritone voice and sings frequently in Australia and the US, in operas and oratorios.

The concert will open with short pieces by English composers Byrd, Tallis, Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi and John Tavener.

The Geelong Chorale, an auditioned chamber choir, has been an
integral part of Geelong's cultural history for well over 50 years,
under a range of names.   They are a section of the Geelong Association of Music and Art Inc (GAMA), and present four concerts a year, as well as participating in community events such as the Pako Festa, and singing at weddings, Anzac Day and other civic performances.  Their concerts range from chamber music to large-scale oratorio-like performances such as Bach's St Matthew Passion, for which they expand their membership from time to time.

The new Costa Centre for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart College is a magnificent addition to the performing arts venues in Geelong.  It is a $7.3m state-of-the-art building, with a new grand piano.  The College is encouraging local groups to use the Centre for their performances, making fine music even more available in Geelong.

As You Like It

The 2008 Alcoa Theatre Season continues with The Bell Shakespeare Company's production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It.  This play explores our desire to escape the slings and arrows of everyday life for a lighter, more romantic place.  Bright, breezy, and reminiscent of the best holiday you ever had, As You Like It, directed by John Bell and starring Saskia Smith (All Saints, The Rage In Placid Lake), is a comedy for anyone who has ever contemplated packing it all in for a simpler life.  In the Forest of Arden, brothers, lovers, friends and foes are tricked, tried and tested in a pastoral pastiche of life, love and the whole damn thing.  Join Rosalind as she goes undercover to right wrongs and in the process, develops a surprising insight into matters of the heart.  As You Like It, Shakespeare's masterpiece of romantic comedy, shows The Bard's genius through fantasy, romance, delicate wit, and broad humour.

Morning Showtime 2008  - I Remember Geelong When…
The Potato Shed is pleased to present the first Morning Showtime for 2008.
Remember when trams ran down Moorabool St?  When Corio Village was the only Shopping Centre in Geelong?  When changing TV channels meant turning a clunky knob and 'remote' simply meant a long way away?    Shirley and Colin bring all this up when they take another stroll down Geelong's memory lane.  They'll again be showing the images and singing the hit songs of those slower, simpler times. Can you remember when Nat King Cole's 'Mona Lisa' was knocked off the number one slot by Johnny Ray's 'Cry'?  Then you're old enough to enjoy this show…  Includes morning tea from Bakers Delight.  Tickets available at the door or from any City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre.

Parisian Soiree - Elysium Ensemble
The music in this program displays the intimacy, delicacy, refinement and, above all, the douceur ('sweetness') of the chamber music written during the age of Louis XIV and Louis XV.  This is the music of elegant conversation that, with the natural charm and sensitivity of its melodies and the classical beauty of its forms, delights the intellect and moves the heart.  Greg Dikmans, baroque flute brings the Ensemble again to Geelong together with Lucinda Moon, baroque violin, Laura Vaughan, bass violion and Donald Nicolson, harpsichord to play the music of Couperin, Marais, Leclair and Telemann.

GEELONG GALLERY
Exhibition - Robert Hollingworth
Robert is a mid-career artist and this series of paintings are inspired by the wild and rocky ranges near Tallarook and the story of Henricke Nelsen.  In 1879, a "wildman" was seen running through the forest near Tallarook, Central Victoria.  He was eventually captured, tried for vagrancy and sentenced to six months gaol.  He'd been living quietly on Mt Tallarook in a secret underground dwelling for fourteen years.  Robert Hollingworth now has a rural property just a few minutes walk from where Henricke Nelsen had his underground hideaway.

Ian Kenins is a writer and photographer.  His photography career began in 1989 as a freelancer for the Sunday Age newspaper, covering news, sport and features.  During this time he was also the Melbourne stringer for Agence France Presse, photographing elections and major sports events.

After six years at the Sunday Age and Age newspapers his interest shifted to magazine assignments, and he has since had over seventy feature photo essays published in magazines such as Inside Sport, Good Weekend, The Bulletin, Sunday Life, Gourmet Traveller, Australian Traveller, The Photojournalist and The Australian Way, amongst others.   He has also been commissioned many times for portrait shoots, mostly of people in their working environment, for these and other publications.  The National Library of Australia has acquired over two hundred of his photographs as images of cultural and social significance for their pictorial archives.

Ian has had two books published. The first, Open For Business (UNSW Press 1998), included short histories and portraits of fifty of Melbourne's oldest small retailers. The second was Beyond the Big Sticks: Country Football around Australia (Lothian Books 2003), with 175 photographs capturing the colour, atmosphere and characters of rural football.

One of Ian's most recent projects has been as co-curator of the latest exhibition on show at the National Wool Museum, Still Going Strong: Geelong's Independent Traders.

This exhibition looks at the fascinating stories of twelve small, independent traders from throughout Geelong, who despite all the odds, have continued trading in the same business for thirty, forty, even fifty or more years.

After working on a similar project for the City of Melbourne, Ian has spent his time since moving to Geelong in September 2005 photographing and documenting many small businesses throughout the City.

In this exhibition he has captured, through his photographs and words, a snapshot of those small independent long-term traders in Geelong who remain, resilient and thriving.

Ian is a keen traveller, preferring to explore the routes less travelled by the majority of tourists, and is planning a number of trips to various destinations around the world, providing ample subject matter for his future writing and pictorial projects.
