A scene from Candy
In 2008, Bethany celebrates 140 years of Supporting and Strengthening the Community and 11 years of the Bethany Arthouse Film Festival.

The Festival begins on the 3 April with The Italian, the Official Russian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards. In this film six-year old Vanya is considered lucky in the children's home; he will be adopted by a loving Italian couple.  Yet Vanya longs to find his own mother, so he embarks on a mysterious and amazing journey with a determination rarely seen at such a tender age.

The Lives of Others, which won the 2006 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, is an intense thriller set in Berlin five years before the fall of the Berlin Wall.  It will be screened on 5 June.  On 3 July Black Book comes to the screen.  Set in the Second World War this film about revenge was selected for both the 2006 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.

On August 7  Running with Scissors screens.  This film is full of well known stars such as Annette Bening, Joseph Feinnes, Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow and is an hilarious and poignant film based on the memoirs of Augusten Burrows.

Closing the season is an Australian film, Candy starring Abbie Cornish and the late Heath Ledger.  Candy is a contemporary love story of startling beauty and tells the story of a young artist whose lust for life takes her to the edge of sanity.

The Arthouse Film Festival raises vital funds for Bethany and is a great way of helping this organisation to support those most in need in our community.  So why not get a few friends and family together and go along to see 5 great films over six months.

Arts News

Vale: Jan Mitchell

The Arts and Culture Department sadly acknowledges the passing of Jan Mitchell, the artist who created the Baywalk Bollards.  Jan passed away on 17 March 2008.  After a period working as a graphic designer in the British television industry Jan returned to Australia in 1984 to continue her career as a designer, illustrator and print maker. Few artists can claim to have had such a strong influence in their city as Jan Mitchell with her unique artistic style leading to the development of Geelong's bollards.  The concept for the bollards emerged when she led an 'Artists in Schools' program in Barwon Heads and approached the City of Greater Geelong with an idea to document the history of Geelong through a series of bollards that would populate the waterfront.  Jan Mitchell was a dynamic and passionate advocate for the Geelong region and the Baywalk Bollards will remain as a fitting memorial to her vision for the city she loved so much.  Jan Mitchell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in June 2006.  She will be sadly missed in the arts community.
