Arts Bulletin 264 28 February 2008 This Week's Feature - von Guérard to von Sturmer - aspects of a collection | Daniel von Sturmer Folded space 2006–07 (installation view) dual screen synchronised DVD Collection: Geelong Galler Gift of the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust as part of the Helen Macpherson Smith Commission (2006) for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, 2007 Image courtesy of the artist and Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne
Stephen Wickham...from Stefan Weisz for Georg Weisz… 2005 digital print Collection: Geelong Gallery Gift of Elissa Ashton-Smith in memory of George Weisz and Margaret Lasica, 2007
Eugène von Guérard (1811-1901) View of Geelong 1856b oil on canvas Collection: Geelong Gallery Purchased through the Geelong Art Gallery Foundation with the generous support of the Victorian Government, the Australian Government, the City of Greater Geelong and numerous community and other donors, 2006.
| This exhibition celebrates the growth of the Gallery's collection over the past two years from the acclaimed purchase in 2006 of Eugène von Guérard's colonial masterpiece View of Geelong (1856) to the Gallery's latest acquisition of Daniel von Sturmer's dual channel video piece Folded space (2006-07), as well as highlighting other works of art that have been recently conserved or the focus of research. A number of these latter works will be displayed for the first time in many years.
While von Guérard's 1856 painting was acquired with generous support from all tiers of government, philanthropic bodies and numerous individual donors, Daniel von Sturmer's Folded space has been gifted to the Geelong Gallery under the terms of a commission funded by The Helen Macpherson Smith Trust through a partnership with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Folded space evolved from a larger-scale installation held at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 2006.
Other new acquisitions on display reflect the scope of the Gallery's collection and include 18th and 19th century furniture and woodwork, antique and contemporary glass, historical documents relating to the early history of Geelong and contemporary paintings, prints and photographs. Many of these works have been gifted directly or through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.
Recently conserved works of art include sculpture by George Baldessin and Ron Robertson-Swann as well as 19th Century works on paper, several of which relate specifically to the history of the region.
Similarly, research is another crucial aspect of developing and interpreting the collection - a responsibility variously illustrated here with the revised attribution of an 18th Century painting of a classical scene, the acquisition of an archive of designs by Edward Fischer (prominent colonial goldsmith), and a rare album of press clippings and ephemera relating to the activities in the 1850s and ‘60s of the Geelong Mechanics' Institute, a forerunner to the Geelong Art Gallery itself, established in 1896.

*NEW* KEATING! – The Musical We Had To Have The 2008 Alcoa Theatre Season continues at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) with KEATING! – political satire at its best with a cast of some of Australia's most colourful politicians: Paul Keating, John Howard, Alexander Downer, Bob Hawke and John Hewson, all singing and dancing. There's even a moving duet with star-crossed lovers Gareth Evans and Cheryl Kernot. Written by Casey Bennetto, the scathingly hilarious lyrics tear through the reign and tragic fall of the Placido Domingo of Australian politics. Part French farce, part Greek tragedy, this is 'the country soul opera we had to have'.
