This Week's Feature - Lysistrata
Lysistrata
Fred Preston Deb Welch, Kate Hunter, Barry Eeles and Allan V Watt

Lysistrata
(From left to right) Fred Preston, Michael Lambkin (sitting), Kevin McCormack and Barry Eeles
In the two millennia since the Greek playwright Aristophanes wrote his comic anti-war masterpiece, Lysistrata, some things have changed but some things, alas, have stayed the same.  Aristophanes might be perplexed at the sight of cars and computers but he would recognise the headlines in the papers and the news on our Televisions.  War is with us.  Again.

Geelong Repertory Theatre Company's first production for 2008 is a modern translation of the ancient Greek play that Aristophanes wrote as a response to the seemingly endless bloodbath that was the Peloponnesian War in the Fifth Century, B.C.  His central heroine, Lysistrata, comes up with a plan that just might bring the troops home.  If she can convince all of the women of Greece, friend and foe alike, to go on a sex-strike, the men might just find the motivation to solve their differences diplomatically.  Sick of losing their husbands and sons to a pig-headed policy of slaughter and sacrifice, the women band together to force the men to put down their weapons and turn to the negotiating table.

Despite the essential seriousness of the subject matter, the play is an unapologetic ribald comedy.  During the play, the men appear with increasing urgency, their flailing and fulsome phalli weighing them down, begging the women to break the strike.  The simple solution of diplomacy comes, however, only after the men of Greece have suffered under the growing weight of their unfulfilled needs.

Featuring a cast of over twenty people of all ages from Geelong, Melbourne and the coast, director Bruce Murray has reinvigorated this seldom performed comedy with his own brand of broad humour. Leading the ensemble is Kate Hunter as the feisty title character, Lysistrata.  She is supported by some familiar Geelong actors including Barry Eeles, Keith Smith and Judy Ellis.

Audiences should note that this production contains adult concepts, sexual imagery and some nudity. It is rated MA15+

GEELONG GALLERY
Otways Edge - Juris Cerins
Shell arts - Geelong region artists program
This exhibition of recent oil paintings and gouaches by Juris Cerins pays homage to the varied and distinctive landscape of the south-west coast of Victoria.  The Australian landscape has featured strongly in Latvian-born Cerins' practice since his arrival in 1944 as a young post-war migrant.  For the last seven years, Cerins has lived on a large bush block on the edge of the Otway Ranges, and it is the coast and surrounding landscape that inspire his work-particularly its marine forms, rock pools, inlets, flood and tidal debris.  Cerins' affinity with the landscape in which he lives and paints is clear: he explores its colours, surfaces and shadows and records these in plein-air drawings in gouache.  Vistas and landforms such as rock formations, eroded gullies, estuaries and treed hillsides are re-interpreted to suggest the mood of the landscape.  These then form a reference for his oil paintings in which the features of the landscape are further dissected, abstracted and rendered in a vibrant palette.

Historic Belcher Fountain Returns
The Belcher Fountain will be installed at the new intersection of Mercer, Malop and Gheringhap Streets in late January.  It is currently undergoing full restoration in accordance with a Heritage Victoria permit.  The Belcher Fountain was first installed at the intersection in 1884 but was moved into Johnstone Park in 1927, to make way for Geelong's tramways service.  When the trams stopped in the early 1950s the fountain went back onto the plantation in the middle of the intersection, but eventually it fell into disrepair.  The restored Belcher Fountain will be an impressive feature of this iconic Geelong intersection.
