Southern Ocean by Roma Burge | Geelong Art Society continues to present the Geelong Waterfront Open Art Exhibition in conjunction with Skandia Geelong week (see dates and times below). This event attracts between 220 and 300 entries of quality artworks from the region and beyond. In the past it has primarily exhibited paintings, however this year there is a small quantity of handmade jewellery by Lynne Bell plus the Trolly Dolly Cloth Doll Club will show their artwork and demonstrate the skills involved. It should be fascinating.
The Geelong Art Society has conducted this exhibition for the past five years for the benefit of local artists, local community and visitors, creating a cultural aspect to this overall extravaganza. Last year 42 pieces were sold, which was considered successful. Renowned artists, Louise Price, Susan Sutton, Robert Tantau, Stephen Salo, Bruno Callori, Joy Timms and Faye Owen are amongst the exhibitors this year.
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club will display their memorabilia with photographs of yachts in action by Terri Dodd and Andre Frankelin also on display and available for sate. Sydney Sculptor, John Hicks who provides the trophies for the yachting events, will also display his works. There will also be a silent auction of a piece of fine art by Bill Kerr, the proceeds of which will go towards further restoration works at the Shearers Arms. The Geelong Waterfront Open Art Exhibition is open to all artists and from 2009 will include a number of other forms of art including childrens' art workshops. This event is un-sponsored but has the support of City of Greater Geelong's, Community Arts Grant Program, without which it would not be viable. In 2007 the event entertained in excess of 10,000 visitors and is expected to exceed this figure 2008.
This exhibition embraces the mission of the society and its home, Shearers Arms Visual Art Centre and Gallery, to enhance the enjoyment of heritage and visual arts for visitors. With the addition of an outdoor coffee court , visitors to Shearers Arms they will be able to see artists at work and place this gallery of quality artworks on the 'must see' list for all who enjoy the arts.
The Geelong Waterfront Open Art Exhibition is supported by the Community Arts Grant Program.

| Performing Arts | Lysistrata This is a woman's translation by Drue Robinson Hagan and produced by Bruce Murray. Greece has been at war for years. Lysistrata - like most of her sex - is sick of it. Unlike any other woman in Greece, however, she has a solution: barricade the bank and co-ordinate a sex strike amongst the woman of Greece. In this ribald comedy by Aristophanes, we see the pressure on both men and women grow to the point of explosion, creating hilarious and uninhibited peace 'negotiations'. Written in 411 BCE, the play addresses the place of women in society and politics, challenging the sexist basis of Athenian democracy. Lysistrata is unashamedly political, satirical and feminist. | Dates: | February 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 | | Times: | 8pm | | Venue: | The Woodbin Theatre, 15 Coronation Street, Geelong West | | Cost: | Adult $20 Concession $18 Student $12 | | Contact: | (03) 5225 1200 | | Website: | www.geelongrep.com.au | Music in the Gardens 2008 This summer, Music in the Gardens promises to be better than ever! Historic Belcher Fountain Returns The Belcher Fountain will be installed at the new intersection of Mercer, Malop and Gheringhap Streets in late January. It is currently undergoing full restoration in accordance with a Heritage Victoria permit. The Belcher Fountain was first installed at the intersection in 1884 but was moved into Johnstone Park in 1927, to make way for Geelong's tramways service. When the trams stopped in the early 1950s the fountain went back onto the plantation in the middle of the intersection, but eventually it fell into disrepair. The restored Belcher Fountain will be an impressive feature of this iconic Geelong intersection.
