This Week's Feature - National Poetry Slam 07 | Preacherman

 Preacherman
| Got something to say? Geelong region ... your time starts now! Geelong Regional Library Corporation is calling all poets, hip-hop artists and other outspoken wordsmiths to polish their rhymes and lyrics for Australia's first ever National Poetry Slam 07, with over $10,000 in cash and prizes on offer.
The library will host one of six slam heats planned across the state with two finalists from each heat battling it out spoken-word style in the Victorian Final at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne in November. Heat winners will take home $100 in prize money while the Victorian winner and runner-up will take home $400 and $100 in prize money respectively, and travel to Sydney in December to compete for the Australian Poetry Slam 07 title.
Poetry slams are audience-driven, participatory events which have been described as 'mud wrestling with words or Australian Idol with a brain!' and are a worldwide phenomenon contributing to the resurgence of poetry and spoken word in contemporary culture. All contestants are given a mic, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges (selected at random at each heat) with their spoken word, poetry, hip hop, monologues and stories. Contestants can speak, sing, scream, rap, howl or even whisper their words. Internationally recognised and talented spoken-word artist Philip Norton will host each heat and entertain the crowd with his own original word artistry.
Poetry slams have existed in the US for 20 years, and these competitions are now gaining momentum in Australia. The Library will also be offering a free preparatory workshop with Philip on presenting your work at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (see details below).
The Victorian heats and final of the Australian Poetry Slam 07 are co-ordinated by the State Library of Victoria in association with Victorian public libraries. The National Poetry Slam 07 is an initiative of the State Library of NSW, and is supported by state, territory and public libraries and festivals across the country. GEELONG GALLERY Through their own eyes Through their own eyes is an exhibition of photographs of favourite objects and associated stories by people with dementia. The idea for the exhibition comes from an exercise from the Alzheimer's Australia Living with Memory Loss program in Geelong, where people bring a treasured item and explain its importance to them. The range of treasured items and their accompanying stories never cease to amaze and delight all involved. It was a natural progression to ask people with early dementia to photograph treasured items and to then exhibit these photographs. These photographs of wives and husbands, grandchildren and great grandchildren, dogs and cats, medals and more provide an insight into how individuals with early dementia make sense of and remain connected to the world in which they live. Through their own eyes is a project of Alzheimer's Australia (VIC) for Dementia Awareness Month 2007.
Art Unlimited - selected works 2007 Art Unlimited, an access studio for artists with a disability, provides professional studio facilities and is staffed by qualified, practicing artists. Artists attending the studio are given full autonomy over the nature and subject matter of their work. Art Unlimited provides the artists the opportunity to work across a wide range of medium including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork and electronic media. This selection of works from the Art Unlimited studio reflects the strengths and diversity of the studio's artists. The works tell the story of the unique perception these artists have of the world. The Art Unlimited studio provides a professional and supportive environment for these artists who would otherwise find it difficult to establish their own independent studio facilities. This body of work is a fine example of the genre known as Outsider Art. Such work is by artists who work independently of established art traditions or style constraints. | Artist of the Month - Phillip Doggett-Williams | Shadow of a Former Self Lithograph 2007
 Monument - bronze maquette 1985
| Graduating from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Melbourne (RMIT) in 1978, Phillip Doggett-Williams has been a practicing artist for almost 30 years. He works across a range of artistic mediums, namely painting, sculpture and lithography.
Phillip's artwork is represented in major collections including The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Gallery of NSW, Artbank and private collections. Whilst his major discipline is making art, he is also employed by RMIT University as a tutor in Drawing and Experimental Textiles. His work as a public art consultant includes projects such as Artplay, Melbourne, Birrarung Marr and other projects for the architectural firm Williamsboag.
He is a resident of Belmont, having moved to the region with his artist wife, Shelley Hannigan and two children in 1999. Whilst his sculptural projects are developed in his Belmont studio, Phillip is a founding member of Argyle Studios in Port Melbourne from where he paints and prints lithographs. The studio consists of 20 Melbourne artists in the heart of industrial Melbourne and was established in 1993.
Phillip is currently working on two major projects. The first is a large bronze figurative sculpture for the Inaugural Lorne Sculpture Exhibition. Curated by Ken Scarlett, the exhibition will open on 26 October 2007.
Phillip was also the successful artist commissioned to create a commemorative public art work to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of St Leonards by Captain George Ward Cole. Titled Cole's Journey, it will celebrate the 150 years that has formed the community of St Leonards since European settlement. The unveiling of Coles Journey is scheduled for early November 2007.
The project was funded by the City of Greater Geelong in partnership with the St Leonard's Progress Association.
