The City of Greater Geelong has awarded a tender to undertake the reconstruction of the turf surface at Skilled Stadium to McMahons Pty Ltd.

The tender entails replacement of the turf at the stadium as well as associated drainage and irrigation work.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell who holds Council’s Sport and Recreation portfolio said following evaluation of each tender McMahons emerged as the preferred contractor for the works.

“The successful tenderer has demonstrated experience in similar projects including turf upgrades at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Stadium Australia,” said Cr Mitchell.

“This project is an important one for the City given the significance of Skilled Stadium as an elite sports venue for the region, being home as it is to an AFL team and many other major sports events each year,” he said.

“One of the requirements of the tender is that the works be completed in readiness for the first home game of the Geelong Football Club next season.

The works will begin after the 28 September following the AFL Grand Final and the Geelong Football League final series.

The City of Greater Geelong Budget of 2009 / 2010 provided $1.1 million for the works.
