VicRoads road crash database
Victorian road accident statistics are collated on the VicRoads road crash database. Data were obtained from VicRoads for accidents defined as resulting in serious road injury (SRI). A serious road injury is defined as a fatality or requiring transport to hospital. These data include all road users (pedestrians, drivers, passengers, motorbike, passenger (pillion), cycle, other driver, other passenger and unknown). For the purposes of these analyses only those in charge of a vehicle are used and defined as a driver (drivers, motorbike, cycle and other driver). As detailed above, BAC (blood alcohol concentration) is not carried out on all drivers involved in road accidents. Therefore in the absence of routinely collected BAC a surrogate measure of alcohol involvement is applied. The surrogate is based on time of day and day of week to represent ‘high alcohol hours’ (Rumbold, Dietze et al. 1997). Table 2 details the times used to define high alcohol hours. Data from 2002-03 to 2004-05 financial year is examined.
