Deaths

This report uses Unit Record Mortality data for Australia obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Information regarding tobacco and alcohol-related deaths in Victoria is available through the analysis of these data. Each case in the data file is assigned a cause-of-death (COD) according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system (National Centre for Classification in Health 2000). These alcohol and tobacco-related cases are identified by applying aetiological fractions as defined by English et al. (1995). (See the methods section below for details on aetiological fractions). The aetiological fraction is applied to the cause of death as categorised by the ICD-10 coding system (National Centre for Classification in Health 2000). Three years of data are presented in this report (2002 to 2004 calendar years). Owing to small numbers, figures pertaining to illicit drug deaths are not presented.
