Karreenga Aboriginal Action Plan
Aboriginal people have lived in this region for more than 40,000 years.
The local Aboriginal group were known as Wadda Wurrung, a powerful and populous tribe that included at least 25 small family clans. They are one of the five peoples of the Kulin Nation.
The City of Greater Geelong has been formally committed to reconciliation and partnership with the local Aboriginal community since 1997.
In 2008 the Mayor and Councillors endorsed the apology made to the stolen generations by the Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP on 13 February 2008.
Our Indigenous Statement of Recognition and Commitment was reviewed following the Federal Government’s apology, and adopted by Council in June 2009.
The Karreenga Aboriginal Action Plan is in draft form and proceeding through consultation with the Aboriginal community.
Council begins its meetings with an Acknowledgement to Country Our work with Indigenous communities is both symbolic and practical. From the permanent flying of the Aboriginal flag at the Waterfront through to programs to address gaps and improve opportunities for Aboriginal people.
