Central Geelong Boundaries
 
Central Geelong is the traditional City Centre for Geelong. For the purposes of the Special Rate the boundaries have been defined as being generally bounded by:
  • Fenwick Street and Cavendish Street in the West
  • McKillop Street from Fenwick to Bellerine Street in the south
  • Bellerine Street from McKillop Street to the Waterfront in the east
  • Waterfront from Eastern Beach to Cavendish Street
     
Who does business in Central Geelong?
 
There are nearly 1,250 non-residential, rateable commercial properties located within Central Geelong. It is recognised as the principal activity area for Geelong and its region. Central Geelong incorporates significant representation of industry sectors including retailing, recreation, leisure and entertainment, professional services, education and training and health and community services.

Retail is the predominant activity within Central Geelong having 117,000m2 of floor space and representing 29% of the region's total. Major retail tenants include Myer, Target, Harris Scarfe, Officeworks and Coles. The larger retailers are mostly located in either of the two undercover centres, Westfield Bay City and Market Square Shopping Centre. These account for nearly half of all retail floorspace in the Centre.
 

Income and jobs generation
 
Central Geelong provides a total of around 20,500 jobs, which represents approximately 35% of all jobs in the Geelong region. Retailing and accommodation and cafes and restaurants contribute 25% of all jobs in the centre. Retailing is the City's second largest employment sector following manufacturing. Finance, insurance, property and business services contribute 16% of all jobs in the Centre are also significant contributors to employment.

A tenancy database has been compiled and will be regularly updated by Central Geelong Marketing to maintain an accurate record of the business mix within Central Geelong. The information from this tenancy database will be used to provide information in the form of directories and listings of business types to assist both businesses within the precinct and their customers.
 

Programs & Activities of Central Geelong Marketing
 
Central Geelong Marketing is the peak marketing body for Central Geeong and implements programs and activities to create a vibrant and dynamic City Centre. The Central Geelong Marketing Committee is responsible for:

  • Undertaking promotions and activities that aim to increase the number of customers, workers, residents and visitors experiencing and enjoying Central Geelong.  
  • Raising the Community's appreciation of Central Geelong and awareness of the businesses located within the precinct.
  • Develop, support and implement events that grow Central Geelong's reputation as a leading business and cultural precinct 
  • Foster improved business capability and presentation by providing educational/training and networking opportunities for Central Geelong businesses 
  • Influence the agenda for economic development, tourism, events and infrastructure relevant to Central Geelong  
  • Gather and disseminate relevant information about Central Geelong
  • Foster effective networking between Central Geelong businesses, business organisations and ke agencies
