Census of Population and Housing
Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics undertakes a census of the Australian community known as the Census of Population and Housing. The most recent Census was undertaken in August 2006. The next Census is due in 2011.
The Census gathers characteristics on the community that is invaluable to strategic planning activities. Data is used widely by people working in Education, Health, Emergency Services, Government (Local, State and Federal), Business, Transport, Infrastructure Services and Welfare Agencies to understand the population in which they operate.
Information from the 2006 will be released in stages over a 12 month period commencing June 2007.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has developed an easy to use website to access Census data - www.abs.gov.au
From the first release of information from the 2006 Census, patterns of population growth and dwelling growth within the Barwon Region compared with 2001 and 1996 are able to be obtained.
