The objectives of the Seafood Strategy are to:

  • Focus on the identification of niche, higher value added markets
  • Further development be based on sustainable resources from aquaculture and wild catch fisheries
  • Build on existing core competencies, such as:
    • Squid processing
    • Scallop processing
    • Mussel growing and harvesting
    • Volume handling of pilchards
  • Move to higher value added products, such as:
    • Squid - for food service and retail markets
    • Mussels - graded product at specific market segments
  • Research and develop new aquaculture products in the areas of scallops, oysters and ocean trout farming
  • Research and develop higher value added products
  • Create networks to co-ordinate the Seafood Strategy and address the industry on four broad fronts:
  • Research and Development
  • Marketing
  • Secondary Processing
  • Education and Training
  • Develop physical infrastructure to support strategy recommendations.
