Work on the new central bus interchange in Moorabool Street will commence today.
The City of Greater Geelong is acting as project manager for the bus interchange which is being funded by State Government.
Council’s Transport and Infrastructure portfolio holder Cr Andy Richards said contractors would begin civil works on the east side of Moorabool Street this week.
“The first step is to secure the site prior to excavating in readiness for the installation of underground services and the pouring of concrete footings,” said Cr Richards.
“This phase of works is expected to take around two weeks after which the site will be reinstated and a similar schedule of civil works will begin on the west side of Moorabool Street,’ he said.
Cr Richards said the bus shelters would be fabricated off site by Geelong company J.C. Brown Blakiston and Shortell and installed after hours to minimise disruption to traffic.
Paving at the two Moorabool Street sites will need to be lifted as part of the project but will be reinstated where required.
Cr Richards said the shelters were architecturally designed and constructed in stainless steel and glass with wooden seating, lighting, safety cameras, solar panels and heaters.
The Moorabool Street bus interchange is being funded by the Victorian Department of Transport.
