City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said having Tiger Airways operating out of Avalon Airport would deliver benefits to both the airline and the Geelong region.
“Avalon Airport is ideally located to service not only Geelong but the wider south west region of Victoria giving greater flexibility for travellers to the region and providing more opportunities for regional Victorians to access affordable air travel,” said Mayor Mitchell.
The Mayor said Avalon was a major economic driver for the broader Geelong region.
“In choosing Avalon Airport as its Victorian base Tiger Airlines has made a fantastic business decision as Geelong and South Western Melbourne continues to accommodate the vast majority of Victoria’s urban growth.
“At the same time the touch down of Tiger Airlines at Avalon will mean jobs for Geelong, both of a direct nature and an indirect nature, and this is obviously a fantastic outcome for our region,” said Cr Mitchell.
Council’s Economic Development portfolio holder Cr Rod Macdonald said the addition of Tiger Airlines to Avalon would deliver a major boost to the wider Geelong region.
“The arrival of Tiger at Avalon will expand the gateway opportunities for Geelong, The Surfcoast and the Great Ocean Road.
“Avalon Airport is perfectly located to accommodate not only a further domestic carrier in Tiger, but ultimately we hope will accommodate international airline traffic for both passengers and extended freight operations,” said Cr Macdonald.
