Wednesday, 24 June 2009 9:19 AM Media Releases

Today 11 Consul Generals representing countries across the globe visited Geelong.

The Consul Generals represented Chile, China, Croatia, Egypt, El Salvador, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Germany, Indonesia, Lebanon, Malta and Oman.

They were taken to Chemring flares factory in Lara and the Geelong Waterfront before heading to Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus for a tour of the Geelong Technology Precinct.

“The Consul Generals’ visit had a strong trade focus, and provided a great opportunity for us to sell Geelong and promote our many business opportunities,” said City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell.

“The visits to Chemring and the Geelong Technology Precinct demonstrated how diverse our economy is – from manufacturing to research.”

He said the tour of the Geelong Technology Precinct highlighted our region’s emerging industries.

“The Geelong Technology Precinct, located at Deakin University, works with countries around the world and has enormous research capacity. There’s huge potential for growth.”

“Plus Deakin has a large number of international students so it was also an opportunity to promote the university to other countries.”

Cr Mitchell said the Consul Generals’ visit enabled the City to push its message that Geelong is very much open for business.

“We have all the facilities of a capital city, coupled with a highly skilled workforce and a quality lifestyle, which make Geelong a perfect place to do business.”

“One unique characteristic of our city is that we have a clear willingness from all levels of Government and our major business partners to attract and work with people interested in investing in Geelong.”
