The name Austin commemorates the contribution to Geelong by Elizabeth Austin, civic benefactor of homes and hospital.

Austin Ward includes Breakwater, Thomson, parts of Newcomb, Whittington and St Albans Park, East Geelong, South Geelong, Geelong and the Central Business District.

Austin Ward is bounded by Wilsons Road, Portarlington Road and the projection of Boundary Road to Corio Bay, by the Bay to the projection of Glenleith Avenue, The Esplanade, Mercer Street to Keera Street overpass, Latrobe Terrace, McKillop Street, Moorabool Street, and the Barwon River.
